The 3rd starting pitcher of the offseason has signed: Justin Verlander. He re-signed today with the Astros on a 1 year, $25M contract with a player option for the next year for the same price. The Astros get back one of their big two, with Greinke still out there. This is an important move for the Astros, as it means they A. won’t miss out on both of them and will at least retain one of their Top-2 SPs & B. It decreases the chances that they resign the big fish, Correa.
For the rest of the teams in the SP market, Angels, Red Sox, Blue Jays, Yankees, Giants, Cardinals, etc. This is one more arm off the market, making it a tad bit more urgent for them to get on their respective horses. The team this really hurts the most though is the Dodgers, as it puts pressure on them as they need to replace both Scherzer and Kershaw (assuming they don’t retain them).
